Acupunture & Dry Needling

What is Acupuncture & Dry Needling?

Acupuncture has helped billions of people and has been the primary source of health care in China for more than 2,500 years. Both the World Health Organization and the National Institute of Health recognize acupuncture to be effective in treating a wide variety of conditions.

Acupuncture and Dry Needling are effective, pill-free, surgery-free options for chronic pain relief and everyday ailments. The combined technique is real medicine with real results, and though the procedure has been around for thousands of years, modern research continues to show the benefit of using acupuncture to treat pain and orthopedic injuries, recover from neurological conditions, improve balance, and reduce stress, anxiety, and even the risk of cardiovascular disease in some patients.

How Does Acupuncture & Dry Needling Work For So Many Ailments?

Acupuncture works as a switch on the body. By targeting certain parts of a person’s anatomy, acupuncture begins to activate the body’s own healing ability.

It helps to lengthen muscles, increase blood flow, and unlike many other treatments, instead of numbing an area, it actually begins to heal the body by reducing inflammation and allowing the body to release endorphins and produce natural pain-killing chemicals.

This is one of the many reasons why acupuncture has such great success at providing long-term relief for chronic pain and continues to be a preferred alternative to dangerous opioids, expensive surgeries, and over-the-counter drugs.

Is Acupuncture & Dry Needling Painful?

Insertion of Acupuncture needles is usually a painless procedure.

There are three things that make Acupuncture pain-free. The first is the shape of the needle. Unlike a hypodermic needle that is designed like a knife to cut through the skin, an Acupuncture needle is pointed like a pine needle. This type of needle, called a filiform needle, is said to push the skin away making the insert virtually painless.

The second is the brand of the needle. We use only the highest quality, smoothest stainless steel needles available. The third is the needling technique. Not everyone inserts a needle the same way. Our doctors spent years studying painless needling techniques.

From an Oriental Standpoint:

Acupuncture is a Chinese system of health care based on energy pathways called meridians, these meridians carry blood and Qi to all of the body’s organs. Qi is best described as a “life force”.

A simple description of Qi is the life force that makes a seed sprout through the soil and becomes a plant. All living things contain Qi. From an Oriental Perspective, an Acupuncturist is increasing Qi and blood to the organs to balance and harmonize the body or they are moving blocked Qi through meridians to alleviate pain.

From a Western Scientific View:

Most major acupuncture points are over nerve plexuses (areas where nerves meet) or over vascular plexuses (areas where veins meet).

Acupuncture and dry needling relax muscle tension. It increases the circulation of blood, thereby reducing inflammation. It releases the body’s natural opioids (pain killers) into the central nervous system to reduce pain.

Acupuncture points are conductors of electromagnetic signals. Stimulating these points releases biochemicals such as endorphins, enkephalin, and immune system cells into the body. Acupuncture can alter brain chemistry by changing the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones.

It has been documented to affect parts of the central nervous system related to sensation and involuntary body function such as immune reactions, blood pressure, blood flow and body temperature. Acupuncture has been proven time and time again to be effective in clinical trials. Studies have been published by the Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of Rheumatology and Arthritis, The British Journal of Medicine, The Mayo Clinic, Harvard University, and many more.

Some recent studies have proven Acupuncture and Dry Needling is effective for lower back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, knee pain, hip pain, fibromyalgia, infertility, painful menstruation, headaches (including migraines), chronic pain syndromes, drug addiction, nausea from chemotherapy and TMJ.
